“Big data” – which admittedly means many things to many people– is no longer confined to the realm of technology. Today it is a business priority, given its ability to profoundly affect commerce in the globally integrated economy. In addition to providing solutions to long-standing business challenges, big datainspires new ways to transform processes, organizations, entire industries and even
society itself. Yet extensive media coverage makes it hard to distinguish hype fromreality – what is really happening? Our newest research finds that organizations areusing big data to target customer-centric outcomes, tap into internal data and builda better information ecosystem.

The term “big data” is pervasive, and yet still the notionengenders confusion. Big data has been used to convey allsorts of concepts, including: huge quantities of data, socialmedia analytics, next generation data managementcapabilities, real-time data, and much more. Whatever thelabel, organizations are starting to understand and explorehow to process and analyze a vast array of information innew ways. In doing so, a small, but growing group ofpioneers is achieving breakthrough business outcomes.

In industries throughout the world, executives recognize theneed to learn more about how to exploit big data. But despitewhat seems like unrelenting media attention, it can be hardto find in-depth information on what organizations arereally doing.

So, we sought to better understand how organizations viewbig data – and to what extent they are currently using it tobenefit their businesses. The IBM Institute for Business Valuepartnered with the Saïd Business School at the University ofOxford to conduct the 2012 Big Data @ Work Study, surveying 1144 business and IT professionals in 95 countries, and interviewing more than two dozen academics, subjectmatter experts and business executives.
